Gov. Kasich: New Jobs Coming To Wilmington

140 new jobs are coming to a town which badly needs them.

Local 12 News Reporter Jeff Hirsh shows us how those jobs will pump more than five-million dollars a year into the economy of the City of Wilmington, in Clinton County.

Lisa Patterson, Cole Taylor Mortgage:
"Where's Wilmington? Why Wilmington? What's in Wilmington?"

What's in Wilmington indeed ... what's in a city where some 7,000 people lost their jobs a few years ago when the DHL package sorting hub closed?

"This was a place that really was leveled."

But sometimes when you do hit rock bottom there's only one direction you can go.

Gov. John Kasich, R-OH:
"When you thought you were down maybe you were on your way up, and that's in a way the story of Wilmington."

Governor John Kasich announced that Cole Taylor Mortgage, a Michigan based firm, was investing several million dollars to expand its relatively recent Wilmington presence.

These desks are empty now, but soon they will be filled.  140 new jobs are coming here and the 50 jobs already existing will be retained.

One of those first 50 jobs went to George Montague, who had been unemployed.

George Montague, Employee:
"If you've had any level of success, to rise and fall and start over again can be very disheartening. But you did?  Yeah, I did."

Ohio was competing with two other states for this expansion and provided eight years of tax incentives.  The governor said his privatized development agency, Jobs Ohio, had a big role ... and defended that agency from critics who call it too secretive.

"When the economy is improving people who are opposed are going to try to create smoke when there is no fire. I've been through this."

Wilmington still has a long way to go ... but to answer that question ... what about Wilmington? Plenty of people are eager to work, and work hard.

Governor Kasich says some eleven-hundred jobs have either been created or retained in Wilmington the past eight months.  The jobs announced today will be part of Cole Taylor's mortgage servicing operations.
