I-71 northbound traffic is being diverted to exit 72 to KY 42 as a detour. ======================================================

BOONE COUNTY, Ky (WKRC) -- Firefighters from several areas remain on the scene on northbound 71 before it joins with I-75, to deal with a tractor-trailer that has caught fire twice.

The tractor-trailer is hauling forty-four thousand pounds of powdered animal fat. Northbound 71 is closed right now. The truck is in the median, but emergency equipment is blocking all but the left lane. For a time, smoke shut down the southbound lanes but they have reopened.

The driver was able to separate the tractor from the burning trailer. He refused medical treatment.

Sheriff's investigators haven't not said how long they think north I-71 will be closed Thursday.
