Colerain Crash Update: Driver May Have Been Street Racing
COLERAIN TWP (Jeff Hirsh) -- A 9-1-1 caller says a car involved in a double fatality accident Saturday night in Colerain Township was apparently street racing.
Two passengers, 19-year old Eric Moorman and 16-year old Rachel McGrath, were killed when their car lost control in the 7500 block of Sheed Road, hit a parked car on the side of the road and then crashed into a tree.
The driver of the car, 19-year old Kyle Stein, is listed in critical condition at UC Medical Center. Several 9-1-1 callers described a terrible scene.
One told the dispatcher, They were going really fast. Somebodys gotta be hurt, later adding, I heard them racing.
Another voice can be heard on the phone saying, 100 miles an hour.
The caller also says a second car involved in the racing later came back to the scene.
Other than saying alcohol and/or drugs are suspected, Colerain Township Police are not commenting on anything else in their investigation, including whether any charges will be filed.
A makeshift shrine, with a cross, flowers, cards, and messages has been put up at the crash scene. One of those who helped, Kevin Best, said he did so because Eric was like my brother.
Another friend who came by, Justin Miniard, said he hoped the crash would serve as a lesson to young drivers not to race.
Its hard, shocking, numbing, Miniard said. I just hope people learn from it. I want people to think before they do things like this. This is the worst consequence that can happen.
Moorman was a 2012 graduate of Colerain High School. McGrath was currently a student at McAuley high school. McAuley had a prayer service yesterday, but would not release any further information about McGrath.
Stein is a LaSalle High School graduate.
