Escaped Inmates Found
TALLAHASSEE, Fl (CBS NEWS) -- The manhunt in Florida for two convicted killers is over.
Police found Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker at a hotel in Panama City, Florida Saturday night, just a hundred miles from the prison they escaped from.
Authorities say no one was injured during the arrest that came just hours after family members urged the men to turn themselves in.
The two men were serving life sentences for separate murders but both were allowed to leave the prison outside of Tallahassee after officials received forged court papers ordering their release.
Amazingly, early this month both men followed Florida law and returned to a jail to register as freed felons.
Corrections workers took their mugshots, fingerprinted them and then watched them walk out the door.
State authorities realized the mistake earlier this week and launched a massive manhunt but by that time Jenkins and Walker were on the run.
The state of Florida is now reviewing old files to see if any other inmates were released early because of forged documents. They have already changed its release system.
Now the sentencing judge has to verify he or she ordered an inmate to be released early.
