Teen Charged With Setting Fire to Kill his Parents

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) -- Butler County Sheriff's investigators say a 16-year-old set a fire at his family's home in order to murder his parents.

Both of the boy's parents escaped the fire at the house on Tarragon Court Wednesday night, despite the fact that investigators say their son tied their bedroom door shut. Perry Simon jumped from the second floor window. Sharon Simon got out with help from firefighters.

Their son, Mitchell Simon, faces two counts of attempted murder and a charge of aggravated arson. Sheriff Richard Jones tells Local 12's Larry Davis that the boy had journals and logs detailing his plans to kill his parents.

Sheriff Jones won't say how the fire was started, but he is amazed at the elaborate plans. Jones says the teen has no prior record with law enforcement. The Lakota West junior is now in the Butler County Juvenile Detention Center after appearing in front of a juvenile court magistrate.
