Search is on for Rare Bourbon Stolen from Frankfort Distillery
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Joe Webb) -- Pappy Van Winkles Family Reserve is a rare, 20-year-old Kentucky bourbon that often sells for several hundred dollars a bottle.
So when the distiller does an audit and some if its missing, they immediately call the sheriff.
They had discovered over a two month period that 65 cases, or 195 bottles, of Pappy Van Winkle, the rare 20-year-old bourbon had been stolen and 9 cases of 13-year-old Pappy Van Winkle rye had been stolen as well, Franklin County Sheriff told Local 12 on Friday.
The theft adds up to a $26,000 loss for Buffalo Trace Distillery. The loss to bourbon enthusiasts is hard to measure.
Its a very unique case because of the rarity of the 20-year-old bourbon. Its highly coveted and sought after. Its what everybody wants and you just cant get it.
At Liquor City Unbridled Spirits in Florence, they have one bottle of Pappy with a $130 price tag. But you cant just come in off the street and buy it.
You come in and buy a bottle of bourbon and get in a drawing for a chance to buy a bottle of Pappy, says manager Molly Kennell. We want to make sure it doesnt get on Ebay or Craigslist. We want to make sure its enjoyed.
Sheriff Melton says the investigation has shown the whiskey was stolen from a very secure area and was craftily hidden.
Obviously were going to look at all the angles but I think it would lead one to believe it very well may have been an internal theft.
The sheriff says leads are coming in. Some bottles of Pappy are showing up online but it isnt clear if they are from the stolen lots.
A distillery spokesperson said it would be inappropriate to comment on an ongoing investigation.
