Union Man Doing Double Ironman Triathlon
UNION, Ohio (Joe Webb) -- Jim White has a full day planned Friday and a busy Saturday morning.
The 49 year old former police officer started a DOUBLE Ironman Triathlon at 5am and he hopes to finish before noon Saturday.
If youre doing the math, a DOUBLE Ironman is a 4.8 mile swim, 224 bike ride and 52.4 mile run.
Thats 281.2 miles.
I like a good challenge, White told Local 12 after the first 60 miles of the bike ride. Ive always done a race and then looked to see what I could do next. Could I be faster? Go longer? Its just a snowball effect of what can you do more.
White has completed 5 Ironman Triathlons, a couple of 50 mile races and a 100 mile race. He trains with the Pain by Numbers Running Group that is provided support for his double. Two members swam with him so he could draft off of them. Several others are riding with him to provide some company and drafting help.
People support each other in the kind of crazy things they decide to do, said group member Kevin Wall.
White is even benefiting from the kindness of strangers. Portland physician Andrew Suchocki, whos in Cincinnati for a wedding, showed up at the Lunken bike trail after hearing about White at a local bike shop.
White says he could probably do this alone but wouldnt dream of it.
This is too much fun to do by yourself. Its all about having a lot of fun with a lot of people you like; telling stories all day and hanging out with a good group of people."
He says he hopes to send a simple message: Anyone can do this if they just get off the couch and put one foot in front of the other and just do a little more the next day.
Anybody can do this. Im nobody special. Im not some great athlete. Im no Olympic anything. Im just some guy who likes to come out and run and bike and swim.
White hopes to complete his DOUBLE Ironman about 10 oclock Saturday morning.
