Teacher Fired for Past Nude Photos in Playboy
DALLAS, TX (WKRC) -- Students, parents and teachers are battling to return a teacher to her classroom after her past "caused a stir" amongst the school.
Christy Nicole Deweese, 21, was a first-year Spanish teacher at Rosie M. Collins Sorrells School of Education and Social Services at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center in Dallas. The school is a part of the Dallas Independent School District (DISD).
Deweese was fired from her position after the district learned she posed nude, and was featured as the 'Coed of the Month' in Playboy Magazine in 2011. She was 18 at the time of the photo shoot.
Debbie Ratcliffe, spokeswoman for the Texas Education Agency, told the Dallas Morning News the situation was "murky".
"It wasn't an illegal activity, but it raises the questions about whether that action violated the Educators' Code of Ethics," Ratcliffe told the Dallas newspaper.
Ratcliffe pointed to the specific ethics standard that states, "The educator shall be of good moral character and be worthy to instruct or supervise the youth of this state."
At least one parent came forward and said the situation was causing a distraction because the students were viewing Deweese's nude photos and videos on cell phones while on the school's campus.
The parent, who spoke to the Dallas Morning News on the condition of anonymity, said, "Are her male 16- and 17-year-old students looking at her without picturing her nude? And for the female students, is this someone they can respect as an educator, someone that they can look up to?"
Several students, teachers and parents have also come to the defense of Deweese posting on social media using the hashtag '#SaveMsDeweese' and starting a petition to get her job back.
"We all miss you so much & want u back bcuz we arent learning & these assignments are hard! U were my fave teacher, no joke [sic]," one student tweeted Ms. Deweese.
She replied to the student, saying, "I'm sorry :( if I could come back I would. I miss y'all [sic]."
One parent sent Deweese and e-mail which the former teacher shared a picture of on Twitter. "You are the best Spanish teacher she has ever had," the parent wrote. "If you need a letter of support you can count on me as a parent and my daughter is willing to support you as well. Hang in there."
WFAA in Dallas (http://www.wfaa.com/news/education/Dallas-teacher-terminated-after--227741721.html) took a poll with the results highly in favor of Deweese. Of the more than 2,400 people who took part in the poll, 88 per cent said she should have never lost her job.
According to Deweese's modeling profile she's been a model since the age of 12 and says she quit to pursue teaching. However, now that she is not teaching, Deweese's profile says she is once again available for modeling gigs.
Deweese says she cannot comment on the termination right now, likely because of potential upcoming legal proceedings.
The Dallas ISD would not comment on Deweese's past or the firing, citing it as a "personnel issue."
