Duke Cuts Down Bamboo and Gives to Zoo
PARK HILLS, Ky. (WKRC) -- Bamboo is a staple in the diet of many zoo animals.
And the Cincinnati zookeepers didn't have to travel far to get stocked up on the plant. It's invasive and it grows quickly, so quickly that it grew to be forty feet tall in some Park Hills backyards.
The bamboo started in one yard and has spread to several others. The bamboo was coming into contact with power lines along Emerson Road and Duke Energy crews came to remove it all.
The zoo took a couple of truckloads of bamboo that it will feed to the red panda, the rhinos, camels and other animals. The rest was tossed in the chipper and will be used as mulch at Duke facilities including substations.
