Phone Scam Targets Senior Citizens

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Ky. (Angela Ingram) -- A warning Thursday about a phone scam targeting senior citizens.

The caller claims to be from the court and that you could be in trouble.  In one case, a Northern Kentucky man was told there was a summons from the court because he owed money to a bank.  Local 12's Angela Ingram joins us with how the man stopped the caller from taking cash from his account before any damage was done.

Charles Smith has a number of health problems, collects disability and lives on a fixed income.  That's one of the reasons why he was worried when a man called him saying "pay 500-dollars or face criminal charges."

Said he was from the Campbell County Court and they were going to serve me with a summons to court unless I contacted a John Michaels.

The 63-year-old says when he called this "John Michaels" the man claimed that there was also an indictment against Smith.

Smith says Michaels claimed the case stemmed from fraudulent checks and unpaid overdraft fees that smith owed to fifth third bank.  Smith used to have a fifth third account and although he did not owe the bank he says the man's threats had him convinced that there was a case against him.

So Smith gave the man his debit card number.

I told my wife you know something just don't seem right on this.  So I called the Campbell County Commonwealth Attorney.

An assistant at the office told Smith it was likely a scam so he called the Campbell County Sheriff's office.

And the Sheriff himself told me, look we never talk about money with anybody and if we got a summons we come face to face and nobody from the Campbell County Court will call you or anybody so it's another scam and these people are good.

Smith almost gave the caller his bank account number but stopped short of that.

He says when he researched the number that the caller used it appeared to be a number originating from Buffalo, New York.
