People in Tri-State Affected by Food Stamp Outage

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A disruption to the food stamp system Saturday was felt all over the tri-state.

The Local 12 newsroom was flooded with calls that people's food stamp cards were not working at area stores.

Vincent Robinson tried using his EBT card at Jungle Jim's and got a very confusing message.

"It wouldn't go through at all, what it said was 'not authorized,' that's the key word that came up 'not authorized'," he said.

"It didn't give a reason why, it didn't print out a receipt or anything."

Many of the people in the tri-state experiencing problems thought the problem was related to the government shutdown. It wasn't. The electronic benefit system is run by Xerox. The company said the debit-style cards weren't working due to a glitch during maintenance procedures. 17 states across the country were experiencing problems. All service had been restored as of late Saturday night.

Roger Groomes of Avondale said the outage caught a lot of people off guard Saturday forcing them to use precious cash for food.

"You can't use your food stamps at the store? You can't use your food stamps at Kroger? So now you've got to use your cash? That hurts a lot of people," he said.

Fortunately, the problems appears to be fixed.
