Space Agency Turns 55 Years Old

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKRC) -- The agency that sent men to the moon and rovers to Mars celebrates an anniversary Tuesday.

Regardless of the government shutdown NASA turns 55 years old.  When it was created on October first 1958, the US officially entered the race to explore space.

Since then 12 men have been to the moon and the goal is to eventually send astronauts to Mars.  The International Space Station and Hubble Telescope were built with help from NASA, which completely changed astronomy and expanded what we know about the universe.

Other innovations help us out everyday, from safer aircraft to medical technology, global communications and robotics.
