A Haunted House with an Eye Opening Twist
INDEPENDENCE, Ky. (Paula Toti) -- It's a twist on a haunted house. This one is meant to send a message to young people about the effects of drugs and alcohol. It's being held at Nicholson Christian Church in Independence.
It's called "Drug House Odyssey" and the sign asks "what side do you choose"?
Inside the exhibit children are faced with choices that can change their lives. Young people waited in long lines to get their chance to tour seven dark dramatic scenes in the opening night Wednesday.
Teens were riveted to scenes like an emergency room where a child was dying after being hit by a drunk driver. Teen Rachel Jett said "it kind of got to me a little, honestly". Her friend Taylor McNabb said it could change attitudes.
The scare house was first done about a decade ago in Campbell County. The church has brought it back to Northern Kentucky with the help of many sponsors. Youth Minister Nate Sallee says the money from sponsors will help to keep the program going year after year.
The scenes aren't true stories, but realistic portrayals of what local police and firefighters see all too often.
There are scenes of students making bad decsions at a party, in another a student with a UK football schlarship throws it away because of heroin. Teen John Elmore said, "it's unbelievable because you have your whole life made and why would you mess it up"?
While you know it's not real scenes like watching a family that never makes it to Disney are tough to watch.
"Drug House Odyssey" runs through Friday from 6:30 - 9. It's free at Nicholson Christian Church. It's not recommended for children under ten years of age.
