Celebrating "Sister" Turning 109
NORTHSIDE, Ohio (Angela Ingram) -- A Northside woman is celebrating a special birthday with her family.
Mrs. Viola Lindsey turned 109-years-old and her loved-ones gathered to celebrate her longevity.
Mrs. Lindsey was born in Mobile, Alabama and moved to Cincinnati in 1943. Her family members says it's a blessing to still have her here and she's shared memories with them that her family says are priceless.
The food is ready and the house is full of family. It's a birthday party for one of Cincinnatis oldest residents, Viola Lindsey.
Her family affectionately calls her, "sister."
She loves to eat greens all the time. Loves to go shopping. Loves all of the kids and can name all of the kids.
And there are plenty to name.
Sister has twin daughters, 92-year-old Bernice and Bertha.
13 great grandkids.
And she outlived two husbands.
She remembers a lot of things and she'll tell you a lot of things and that's the stuff that we all take in.
And just going from not having electricity, to outhouses and bathrooms to living through the Jim Crow days all the way up to now.
The family says sister is 109-years-old but the Social Security Administration claims she 113.
Either way, it's still who lives that long? Who lives that long and she tells me every time I see her, you know, Oh, I won't be here much longer. And I say, But you said that 13 years ago!
Sister's hearing and vision aren't as good as they once were, but she dances
And she's quick to show off her exercise routine for visitors.
At the end of the evening the family gathers around their beloved matriarch singing, Happy Birthday. While sister's secret to longevity isn't exactly clear, what's certain is that laughter and lots of love definitely played a part in it.
Mrs. Lindsey lives in a house with her 92-year-old daughter. Family members and a caregiver help out. Family members say earlier this year Mrs. Lindsey got a home visit from State Representative, Dale Mallory.
A caregiver from the council on aging asked Mallory to meet her and learn more about the services the council provides to seniors.
