Touring Rumpke's New Recycling Center

ST. BERNARD, Ohio (WKRC) -- Rumpke  opens one of the country's largest recycling facilities today after a fire at the plant last year destroyed the previous facility. It's the company's biggest, fastest, and most technologically advanced recycling center to date. Perry Schaible got a tour of the new facility.

Rumpke did it bigger and better, investing $32 million into the project on Vine Street. The fire in April of 2012 did so much damage, Rumpke had to tear down the previous facility and start again. They broke ground in December and are now up and running. Trucks have been running in and out of the center for about a month. Time lapse video shows the rebuilding process.

The building houses one of the most technologically advanced sorting systems available. Jeff Rumpke says "It's a 100,000 square foot facility able to process one million pounds of recyclables a day. So we're doing about 55 tons an hour. We need more of that material to come into the plant, we're ready to handle it and we want to service the community."

Rumpke officials toured nine other facilities across the country to get the best ideas and they say they've implemented  them.

Rumpke says the center will serve more than 4.5 million residents in Cincinnati and surrounding areas.
