Quinlivan Talks About Council Defeat

CINCINNATI (Jeff Hirsh) -- A Cincinnati city council member who lost last week says she has no regrets about criticizing the police and fire budgets as being too big.

Laure Quinlivan was back at city hall Thursday, where she spoke with Local 12 News reporter Jeff Hirsh about the election and the issues she cares about.

Laure Quinlivan was the only council member to criticize the police and fire budgets saying they have grown too quickly and take up too much of the city's dollars at the expense of other programs.

When asked if she thought her outspoken opinions cost her the election she said, "I don't think that's the reason."

She continued, "I think low voter turnout is the primary reason.  A lot of people who are happy with the way the city is going for some reason did not get out there and vote.  But I don't regret telling the truth to voters about what I think the solutions are to the problems that we actually have."

With only two weeks left in her term Quinlivan is still pushing issues she cares about; like 30,000 dollars to keep homeless shelters open in the winter.

Although she was the one who successfully changing city council terms from two years to four, she was not re-elected.

"I am for good government.  I believe that four year terms allow elected leaders, no matter which party they are from, to provide better leadership, make better decisions.  So yes, I would like to be serving a four year term but I'm still glad that we passed four year terms."

Quinlivan's proposal to provide money for the homeless shelters was unanimously passed by members of the budget committee and it's expected to pass the full council.  The new council and mayor-elect John Cranley will be sworn in December 1st.
