12th Annual Ohio River Paddlefest
The Ohio River Paddlefest has become the largest paddling event in the country. More than 2,000 adults and children in 1500 canoes and kayaks will paddle the Ohio River on Saturday, June 22 to celebrate the beauty of our region's most valuable natural resource.
Paddlefest weekend has grown to include the award winning Kids Outdoor Adventure Expo, the Ohio River Music Festival & Gearfest and CincyPedalfest. These events taken together demonstrate the diversity and accessibility of outdoor recreation opportunities available to residents of our region.
Schedule of events:
Thursday, June 20 - The Kids Outdoor Adventure Expo at Coney Island from 9:30 am till 4:30 pm. Free and open to the public. The largest water safety and environmental education event for children in the Midwest. The Expo will be divided into four themed activity "villages": Let's Splash, Let's Move, Let's Expore, Let's Go Green. Children will learn how to catch a fish, properly wear a life jacket, ride a bike, paddle a raft or kayak, tickle a goat, do Yoga and Zumba, pilot a towboat, identify the fish and wildlife of the Ohio, prevent water pollution, climb a climbing wall, grow vegetables, make a salad, generate renewable energy, take a nature hike and encourage their parents and siblings to recycle, save energy, pick up litter and enjoy the natural world in their own backyard. Boat rides on the Queen City Clipper will also be available for $2 per person depending on availability.
The Kids Expo is presented by Green Umbrella in partnership with the Hamilton County Park District, The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile,Jr./US Bank Foundation, General Electric and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Friday, June 21 The Ohio River Music Festival & Gearfest at Coney Island from 10 am till 11:30 pm. Live bands on the WNKU stage, canoe and kayak lessons, Dragon Boat races, kayak fishing tournament, used canoe and kayak sale, boat demos, wooden boat show, silent auction, basket raffle and outdoor gear market and vendor fair. This year's musical line up includes Jake Speed and the Freddies, Wheels, The Lewis Brothers, Jeremy Pinnell & the 55's and headliner Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band. Parking is $4 and a $5 donation is requested for the festival.
Saturday, June 22 Paddle - or Pedal - the Ohio:
Paddle It... at the 12th Annual Ohio River Paddlefest with the Ohio closed to barge and powerboat traffic, canoers and kayakers paddle 8.2 miles from Coney Island to the Cincinnati Public Landing. Paddlers depart Coney Island starting at 8:00 am with the last boat leaving at 9:00 am. Participants in the 11 Mile Amateur Race take off starting at 7:15 am. The 8.2 mile paddle is sponsored by the Hamilton County Park District.
Pedal It... at the 2nd annual CincyPedalfest Ride for the Trail. Ride 19.5 miles roundtrip from Yeatman's Cove to Lunken Airport and Armleder Park and back. Registration opens at 6:30 am at Yeatman's Cove with the family friendly ride departing at 8:00 am. This is the only ride to promote the development of bike trails in our region. Presented by REI in partnership with Queen City Bike, Sierra Club and Green Umbrella.
Pedal & Paddle It... leave Yeatman's Cove at 7:15 am, ride 8.5 miles to Coney Island and paddle 8.2 miles down to the Public Landing.
Paddlers and cyclists alike will then enjoy live music by Hickory Robot, food, refreshments, exhibits and bike demos at the Gold Star Finish Line Festival at Yeatman's Cove from 10:30 am till 2:30 pm. New this year is an interpretative Global Water Dance presented by the Greater Cincinnati Dance Alliance, a collaboration of dancers, musicians, artists and the environmental community presented on the lower level of the Serpentine Wall as paddlers make their way to the finish line. Admission to the Festival is free and open to the public.
