Man Charged In Cockfighting

A Butler County man faces charges related to cockfighting.
27 year-old David Wayne Smith is accused or raising roosters and selling them for the purposes of fighting.
The sheriff says the charges follow a lengthy investigation.
Local 12 News Reporter Larry Davis has more on what the sheriff is saying about another case of alleged animal abuse in his county.

David Wayne Smith is charged with one count of animal cruelty and one count of animal fighting.

The Sheriffs Department says Smith raised roosters on property on West Elkton Road.

A number of them could be heard today, but not seen by our Local 12 camera. Smith is accused of raising the roosters for cock fighting.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones say Smith raised the roosters, prepped them, and then sold them for cockfighting in Kentucky. He says such fights are simply gruesome.

There have been a number of animal cruelty cases in Butler County.
 Just recently appointed to oversee the dog warden duties in the county, the sheriff sounded a warning to those who abuse any animal   

Local 12 News attempted to contact Smith today at home, but no one answered the door.
He is free on bond and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
