Teachers Go Above and Beyond
As parents, students and teachers getting ready for school that first day can be nerve wracking.
One local district is going above and beyond to help put their students minds at ease before the school year begins.
Angelica Meade and Tracy Heater are two teachers on a mission.
Every year for the past decade Mason County school teachers like Meade and Heater have visited their students in the weeks before school starts.
Mason County was the first school district in Kentucky, and one of the first in the nation, to require before-the-school-year visits. Kids of all ages get a knock on their door, from kindergarten to high school.
Besides getting to know the kids this is a critical opportunity to get to know mom or dad. Establishing contact with the parents makes the rest of the year go smoother.
The Mason County School System won a national award from the American School Board Journal. It cited the home visit program for being a creative and innovative way to help students.
