Federal Panel Rejects Appeals of Former Drug Dealing Doctor
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A federal panel rejects the appeals by a Chicago doctor, sentenced to four life terms in prison.
Doctor Paul Volkman is charged with crimes stemming from the painkiller overdose deaths of four patients. From 2003 to 2005, Volkman made weekly trips from Chicago to southern Ohio to deal oxycodone.
He practiced in Portsmouth and Chillicothe. Investigators say he dispensed more oxycodone than any other physician in the country.
Thursday, the 6th UC Circuit Court of Appeals judges ruled 3-nothing against Volkman. He was convicted in Cincinnati last year on federal charges including unlawful distribution of drugs.
Volkman's appeal challenged several things, including the judge's jury instruction, and whether his sentences were reasonable. In their ruling the judges say Volkman breached his profession's prime directive to do no harm.
