Child Caught in the Crossfire of Gunbattle

AVONDALE, Ohio (Deb Dixon) -- A three-year-old was with her mother taking out the garbage when a running gun battle broke out and a bullet struck her.

The bullet hit Leah Johnson in the buttocks then moved through her tiny body to her abdomen before exiting.

Gunman fired lots of bullets judging from casings found along the scene.  They didn't hit their target, but one bullet did hit 3-year-old Leah Johnson.

Late Thursday, the fire department's ladders allowed detectives to search roof tops for guns.  None were found outside or in the apartment building where six people were coaxed out by the SWAT team.  They are still being questioned but nobody has been charged.

Cincinnati Police Captain Mike Neville called, them, "Persons of interest."

If a child had not been struck some residents say it would have been just another night in the neighborhood.

The next 48 hours are very important for Johnson.  Local 12 News reporter Deb Dixon is told she has survived surgery and has started the long road to recovery.
