Township May End Sheriff Patrols

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) -- Hamilton County Sheriffs Deputies may soon stop patrolling in Colerain Township, a decision trustees could make next week citing a strained relationship with the county over the cost of the contracted service.

Colerain Township trustees will decide next Tuesday whether to end their contract with the Hamilton County sheriffs department.

Currently, there are 6 Hamilton County deputies who patrol in Colerain Township. That's down after the county cut thirteen deputies because of budget problems last year.

Trustees will vote on a plan that will replace the deputies by giving eight volunteer reserve officers full and part-time positions in the Colerain Township police department.

Colerain Township administrator Jim Rowan says the township is likely to go to voters with a police levy sometime next year.  He's hoping this will allow them to gradually hire thirteen new officers.
