Toddler shot during gun battle in Avondale
AVONDALE, Ohio (Larry Davis) -- A three-year-old child is at Children's Hospital after being shot in Avondale early Tuesday morning. Larry Davis has the latest.
Police say people began firing at each other just before 2:30 a.m., on Tacoma Avenue in Avondale. A neighbor says the little girl was standing in a doorway as her mom took out the trash, when that shooting started. Police found about 20 shell casings in the area.
A bullet hit the girl in the rear end. The bullet then moved into her stomach and exited. Police do say the girl is in critical condition, following surgery.
The shooting angered a lot of people in the neighborhood. Marquatta Sanders says her family was awakened by gunfire. "My kids came running in my room like mom they're shooting, they're shooting. They woke my kids up out there asleep. so I'm like get down, get down thinking it was normal shots. Next thing you know I hear my neighbor come outside like they done shot my baby, they shot my baby. I'm like oh, my god, what is going on? It still didn't hit me that they shot Leah until I saw her come outside and I saw the blood."
A SWAT team responded to the area where the toddler was shot. Six people, who were inside a building, voluntarily came out. Police questioned them, but no arrests have been made.
