Medical Edge: Healthy Gifts
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- It's the season of giving and we all know that can be expensive.
So why not give a gift of your time to help others? If the holiday shopping season has exceeded your budget then stop spending and start giving the gift of time in the name of a good friend or family member.
How? Doctor Lesley Arnold says you can join a clinical trial for someone you love. She is studying a new medication for a condition which causes chronic pain. It needs participants who have a condition called fibromyalgia; but many clinical trials are available to help others and need comparisons to healthy volunteers.
She says, "We are looking at pain as the primary focus. We want to help patients try to experience relief of pain using new treatments that are safer."
If that seems too long of a commitment, try donating blood. Jamie Glahn started doing that 8 years ago and has never looked back since.
"Especially this time of year when people start thinking about giving, and giving back, and all that kind of stuff like that. It's really important to realize that being a blood donor you give back, and not just around the holidays, in the middle of summer you give back and you really feel good about it."
Doctor Ronald Sacher says the holidays are one of their toughest times to gather blood donations, "I think people's focus is doing the holiday seasonal things, rather than donating blood."
So here is what you need to know: In this season of giving you can donate and it costs you nothing. You can also donate in the name of someone else, and leave them a note under the tree.
The other thing you need to know is that Hoxworth Blood Centers really needs new donors. Those who are regular donors this time of year often go on vacation, people get sick this time of year and the weather has been challenging. So if you are at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and are basically healthy you can be a new donor.
If you want to give another way, volunteer in the name of someone you love. Rob's Kids was started by Sam Potter to help stop teen depression. After Sam lost her dad Rob to suicide she started Rob's Kids. They need dozens of volunteers all year long.
Finally, if you have a friend that also wants to step up good health in the new year, volunteer to be a walking or workout partner. It doubles the commitment and makes it easier when shared. If you think about it, your gift of time is the most valuable gift you have.
