Falmouth mayor helps fight fire

FALMOUTH, Ky. (WKRC) -- Fire forces several people from their homes in Falmouth.

The fire sparked in a first floor unit of an apartment building on Shelby Street Wednesday at about 8 p.m. The fire spread to a second floor unit and was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Everyone inside made it out safely. One dog and two cats did not survive.

The Falmouth fire chief says crews contained the fire to two of the six units in the building, but the other four have smoke and water damage. Multiple fire departments were called in to help put out the fire.  Falmouth mayor and trained firefighter Mark Hart even joined in the fight. The power and gas to the building is shut off.

It's not clear when neighbors will be allowed to return home. The red cross is helping those affected. A state fire marshal is expected to take a look at the scene today.
