Rumpke to Search for Mercury-Tainted Trash

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) -- Rumpke crews in Colerain Township will begin moving trash in an effort to find machines carrying a toxic metal.

Rumpke says it believes machines with about 45 pounds of mercury in them are 25 feet under the surface of the landfill.  To get them, equipment will be used to excavate as much as 31,000 square feet of dirt and garbage.

The problem machines are flow meters, cleaned out of a storage room at the Little Miami Wastewater treatment plant in June.  They were supposed to be empty of the mercury inside, but that removal never happened.

The excavation work at the landfill is expected to begin sometime during the week of January 6th.
