Mayor Delays City Manager Vote
CINCINNATI (Joe Webb) -- Willie Carden is still the only known candidate for Cincinnati City Manager, but hell have to wait a week to get the job.
Tuesday morning, City Councils Rules and Audit Committee was prepared to pass ordinances that would give Carden an exemption to live outside the city and move his nomination to a full council vote on Wednesday.
After the meeting was called to order, Mayor John Cranley pulled the items off the agenda. Cranley said he had thought things over and wanted to slow the process down so council members would have time to consider Cardens qualifications.
Im hoping that you all will feel better about the process if you have more time to digest these ordinances and an opportunity to meet with Mr. Carden, Cranley told the committee.
Carden lives in Colerain Township. Cincinnati municipal code requires Senior executive officers who hold the titles of city manager, assistant city manager or director shall be required to reside in the City of Cincinnati while holding such fiduciary positions.
Cranley told Local 12 that Carden told him not to nominate him for the job if getting an exemption would be an issue.
Vice Mayor David Mann said the residency exemption is a formality and should not hold up Cardens confirmation.
All other things being equal, Id prefer that he live in the city but he has had an exemption along the way as Parks Director. So in fairness and to be consistent Im willing to support an exemption in the new job.
