Third Grade Students Scoring Below Reading Target

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- More than a quarter of Ohio third graders scored below a new literacy target on fall reading tests.

The results provide the first glimpse of how many students may be at risk of failing the grade this year.  Under the state's new third grade reading guarantee, students can be held back if they don't meet tough new reading targets.

State results posted Friday show nearly 33,000 students, or 26 percent of those who took the fall reading test, showed limited proficiency and missed the new mark.

Officials say those who still lag at years end will have several opportunities to re-take the reading test and advance to fourth grade.
