School Workers Toss Kids Lunches in Trash

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (WKRC) -- A Utah school cafeteria manager and district supervisor have been placed on leave during an investigation of why lunches were taken from students who owed money on food accounts.

School officials at an elementary school in Salt Lake City are apologizing for throwing away student lunches.

"It was a mistake. It was wrong. It shouldn't have happened."

On Monday, a district child nutrition manager went to the school to investigate dozens of outstanding balances in school lunch accounts.  Tuesday, an estimated 32 students with outstanding balances brought their trays to the computer to check out, but staff took away their lunches and threw them in the trash.

Those students were then given a partial lunch, which is what they give to students who can't pay.  It usually consists of a piece of fruit and a milk.

A district auxiliary services director is now investigating.
