Evacuations ordered for California wildfire

GLENDORA, Calif. (AP) -- Hot, dry winds are fanning a wildfire across the foothills of Southern California's San Gabriel Mountains, about 25 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

The notorious Santa Ana winds picked up at daybreak, blowing embers into a canyon neighborhood just north of Glendora.  At least two and a-half square miles of brush have been charred, while several structures including homes have burned.

Glendora police officers have been going door to door ordering residents to leave.

Police says they questioned three persons of interest detained near a trail where the fire is believed to have started. However, officials say they are not suspects.

California is in a historically dry era and winter has brought no relief. Red flag warnings are posted from Santa Barbara County south through Los Angeles to the U.S.-Mexico border, along the spine of the Sierra Nevada, and in areas east and north of San Francisco Bay.
