Tough winter means salt shortages in some local counties

WEST CHESTER, Ohio (WKRC) -- Union Centre Boulevard in West Chester is one of the priorities for treatment for when it snows. However, Butler County officials aren't going to be able to lay a lot of salt there or anywhere else, because the county is running low. Other municipalities, like Monroe Township, may need help from neighboring communities to get through winter.

It's been a tough winter and counties all across the area are tying to conserve the best they can. Many officials, including Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkins, are keeping their fingers crossed that the worst is behind us. "Well the real hope is that it quits. but the reality of that we never know. We've seen snow through March. We'll hope the suppliers can catch up, we'll hope the river is in good shape, the supplies start coming in, and then we'll be good."

The bitter cold is actually helping a bit. It allows county engineers to pull back on salt use. Salt doesn't work as well when temperatures dip below 20 degrees.

If you live on a street that hasn't been salted or plowed, we want to see it. Post your pictures on our local 12 Facebook page.
