Reading IGA to close
READING, Ohio (Tiffany Wilson) -- The Reading IGA will shut down soon. As Tiffany Wilson reports the owner, Steve Goessling, never thought he would be in this position.
Steve Goessling bought the Reading IGA in 1998. In 2002, he was honored for turning the store around and revitalizing it. However, the IGA has faced tough competition from Walmart, Kroger, Aldi and Menards. "We've had a difficult time posting any profits in that store for some time, a couple of years now. And the day has finally come that I had to make the call."
Loyal shoppers are unhappy to hear of the store's impending demise, especially one woman who shopped there because they would order items special for her and her dietary restrictions. "The Reading IGA is what it says, it's our hometown store. They've got good people in there, people you get to know on a personal basis. "
Goessling recently told his more than 30 employees about the closure. It is now down to a skeleton crew and shorter hours. There's no exact closing date just yet.
Goessling has also spent the past few hears working to bring life back to the former Keller's IGA in Clifton. Construction work stopped on that location over the summer after Goessling announced he did not have the financing for the four million dollar renovation. He hopes to have new information on that location soon.
