Authorities Investigate Counterfeit Money

HILLSBORO, Ohio (Larry Davis) -- People who live in one part of the tri-state are looking at their money a little more closely.

Some counterfeit cash is being passed around town and it even turned up at the bank.  The counterfeiters think they are crafty turning five dollar bills into fifty dollar bills.  But some alert bankers spotted the funny money and want to spread the word how to help others spot it too.

Four cases have been reported in Hillsboro and three more in nearby Wilmington.  Local businesses are being put on alert as police try to track down the counterfeiters.

Authorities say the counterfeiters are taking five dollar bills, white washing them, and then printing a fifty on top of them.

The phony money was first discovered at NCB Bank in Hillsboro.

"We called other area banks just to put them on alert and let them know we had discovered the counterfeit fifty dollar bills.  We did discover that other banks have taken just in recently some counterfeit bills as well from area businesses."

Counterfeit money isn't new to the area.  The Hillsboro police chief says fake bills made the rounds here a couple years ago.
