Partners in Prime helps seniors with meals and safety
HAMILTON, Ohio (Larry Davis) -- Extreme cold can pose a health threat to everyone. But single-digit temperatures are especially dangerous for the elderly.
The agency in Butler County called Partners in Prime keeps an eye on the elderly. Volunteers makes sure they get hot meals on a cold winters day. Volunteer Susan Clem says "you'll never have a bad day delivering Meals on Wheels, it's very gratifying."
It's a service many elderly rely on, no matter what the weather. "It's a life saver" says
Rosemary Deborde in West Chester. She and her husband Charles have been getting Meals on Wheels since Charles had a stroke in 1999. "It's very good, very good meals. My wife doesn't have to cook as much," says Charlie. "You've got to have something to eat, not just the meals, but something prepared."
Meals are prepared the day before at Partners in Prime. 700 meals a day are prepared for elderly and the shut-in. The recent snow and cold make the delivery of these meals even more important. Christy Quincy says "it's a challenge. They dress appropriately. They start very early in the morning. They will see to it that they get in the door to get their eyes on their clients. Many of them know the clients well and know what to look for."
Susan Clem says despite the winter weather she makes her runs because she knows people depend on her and the other Meals on Wheels volunteers. "You know you're going to be in the ice, cold and snow ,so you dress appropriately for it and dress warm and run back to your heated car, hop back in and hit the next house and off you go. It's done before you know it."
"We don't have our drivers calling off saying it's too cold, it's too windy. They know that their job is very important." Volunteers also check on the clients' heat and make sure they're wearing warm clothes. They even make sure the garbage cans are back from the curb. The volunteers say their clients almost become like family to them.
