Protecting Your Car from Road Treatments

CINCINNATI (Scott Dimmich) -- Road treatments could cause damage to your car in places you can't see.

On paper, some of the chemicals used to keep snow and ice off of Tri-State roads are less caustic than salt, but the owner of Evan's Auto Care in Blue Ash says the solution being applied now, is sticking around longer than you might think.

"In reality, what they found is that because it's a wet solution it adheres."

While salt, brine, and beet juice can corrode the shell of your car, corrosion is more likely to occur in a place that is harder to clean and harder to see, underneath your car.

"As time continues and brine continues to accumulate, it is very caustic. We've seen an increase in break lines made out of steel, rust out and fuel lines rust out because they are also made of steel."

Brodof says avoiding a car wash that thoroughly cleans the bottom of your car could leave you in his shop.

"Get all of that brine out from underneath your car because if not it can corrode and rust from the underside of your car and use can lose your break line and lose your breaks."
