Teenager Goes Down the Wrong Path, Charged with Murder
AVONDALE, Ohio (Angela Ingram) -- They are teenagers charged with murder and their arrests this week are particularly hard for one community activist.
15-year-old Dontay White is accused of murdering William Moritz and DeShawn Hutchinson. Two other suspects are also charged in the Moritz case.
Dontay White was actually on the Avondale Youth Council which was all about improving the neighborhood. His uncle says there were plenty of positive influences in Dante's life but still, he fell in with a negative crowd.
18-year-old Antonio Ruff, 16-year-old Tyrone Coleman, and 15-year-old Dontay White are all accused of killing William Moritz. Dontay comes from a close knit family and his uncle is the co-founder of the Avondale Youth Council.
The youth council has been successful in helping young people. Despite having positive influences his uncle, Fulton Jefferson, Jr., says Dontay made poor choices.
"Like I said he got in with the wrong group of people. He decided that's where he wanted to be and he didn't like the authority side that his father, grandfather was doing. That's what he decided to do."
A community council member says he believes a small group is responsible for the increase in violence in Avondale. He says two years ago, when the neighborhood had zero homicides, church groups, community activists and police all worked together.
Jefferson says he wishes his nephew had taken a different path.
"He just...didn't want to conform. So he's on his own here for awhile till we find out what happens to him."
Dontay White next goes before a judge February 11th for a probably cause hearing.
