Local stores running short on salt
COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) -- With another winter storm on the way, salt is at a premium. Right now, local suppliers are struggling to keep up with the high demand.
The shortage isn't just a Tri-State problem, there are issues around the country. Locks and dams on the Mississippi are iced up, making it difficult to ship the salt up to the area from Louisiana. Mid-level supplies are short on salt and that is trickling down to mom and pop stores.
Store owners only expect the problem to get worse with this next storm. Says Greg Gordon of Loesh Hardware, "shovels, we've sold this year, for two years we haven't sold shovels. Salt and de-icer though, we've gone through more this year than the last three years combined, probably."
"This past summer, this place was full of salt because we didn't sell last year. but now, look it's empty, it's very tough," says Bob Ewers of Harry Ewers and Sons.
The store employees we spoke with say it's very frustrating to hear the phone ringing off the hook from people looking for salt and they don't have any. They say they're losing out on some big sales.
