Health Alert: Tomatoes and Cancer
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- We've known for awhile that tomatoes carry lycopene, which may play a role in certain cancers; but this report says it may play a role in obesity as well.
We stopped out at Cancer Family Care in Mount Auburn to tell you more about this study. It is published in the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Researchers found that tomatoes don't just contain lycopene, but in that they also contain an antioxidant that appears to raise levels of something called adopecticn.
This has been linked to increased risk for obesity if it's not regulated. So it means it could lower the odds of abdominal obesity also linked to breast cancer.
You can get this in tomatoes but it's more concentrated in tomato sauce and tomato juice. You need about half a cup of sauce, one cup of juice to get the 25 milligrams of this now suggested each day.
