Nurse Charged in Death of Patient

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (Deb Dixon) -- A nurse is charged with causing the death of a patient at a Lawrenceburg nursing home.
At first, no one thought anything was suspicious about the death of 77-year-old Dionne Scalf.  An eyewitness of the incident reported the matter to the nursing home and during a family holiday dinner the incident was conveyed to Officer Jacob Jump of the Lawrenceburg Police Department.

Further investigation into the matter confirmed that the eyewitness had observed the abuse being committed by the suspect, Kathy Hess.  Hess is a nurse that worked at Woodland Hills but was terminated in December of 2013 due to the incident.

The victim was almost cremated before it was determined that Hess had broken Scalf's back by shaking her on December 20.  The autopsy found that the victim had a broken vertebra that resulted in her death.
The nurse, Kathy Hess, faces charges of reckless homicide, battery resulting in the death of an endangered adult and neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.
