Scam targets those needing help paying for heat

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- The Ohio Development Services Agency is warning of a scam targeting people who need help paying for their heat this winter.

The scammers call people and claim to be from the Home Energy Assistance Program or HEAP. They claim that HEAP has extra money to help people with the recent cold snap. Then they request banking information to deposit the funds.

This is not a call from an authorized HEAP agent and is likely a scam to take money from victims' bank accounts. Do not give your bank account or other information over the phone to an unexpected caller.

If you or someone gets such a call, call the HEAP helpline at 1-800-282-0880.
