Costco and Menards coming to Mall Road development

FLORENCE, Ky. (Paula Toti) -- The city of Florence looks poised to get two new stores, Costco and Menard's.

Both would be new to Northern Kentucky and would be located at Mall Road and U.S. 42.  Florence Mayor Diane Whalen says both have signed a letter of intent with a developer to build on the 64 acre site.
The city went looking for stores that would be new to the area.  Costco is a warehouse membership store, and Menard's is a home improvement store known for values.
The city hopes the property, now a farmland, will be built into a destination point.  Costco is the type of retailer that has people driving what is considered a long distance for grocery items.
Jim Beamer and his wife live near Blanchester and drive to the Fields-Ertel Costco in Deerfield Township twice a week.

He says, "It's a great place to shop and we've surrendered to Costco."
The mayor says the two stores were high on a wish list of local businesses and residents.  Also on that wish list for the second phase of the development is a sporting goods store.

Whalen says, "A Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops would benefit from the location."
Whalen says the city and state will be investing in the surrounding infrastructure to help with traffic flow.  In fact, she says the state of Kentucky has budgeted for a southbound entrance ramp from Mall Road to southbound 75, next to the northbound exit ramp, to help keep traffic off 18 and 42.
The  mayor says Costco could be built as early as the summer of 2015 and Menard's next spring.
The development would be called 'Florence Heights.'
