Medical Edge: Freeze your way to better health

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- Just a few weeks ago Allison Head said she got tired of hurting from some old injuries so she decided to try a few sessions of Cryotherapy, as it's now called.

It takes less than five minutes to strip down and step into a circular tube.  It starts the chilling process in a matter of seconds and much like you ice an injury to ease inflammation it's designed to provide the whole body with the same benefits.

Chris Parsons is the owner of this Cryospa and he said, "We blow gas nitrogen on you to negative two hundred and negative three hundred degrees, for about two and a half to three minutes.  What that does is it takes your skin down to about 30 degrees.

By getting the body temperature down he says, "We are tricking your mind into thinking you are freezing."

Apparently something appealing, even if you are not a fan of freezing.

Head said, "I'm not a good cold person, I love the warmth.  But this energizes me."

Which brings us to the point that I wondered about too, I don't like the cold either.  So why would I want to try cold therapy, and what does it feel like?  So they let me climb in with my clothes on to check it out and I have to tell you, it's kind of invigorating.

My description is if you jump into a pool it's an immediate rush, and your heart feels really warm, and then it goes away, this lasts all day.  It is designed to be used as a therapy that compliments, not replaces, medical care for aches and pains.  Allison Head says the first session helped her "chill out."  She now comes for maintenance at least a couple of days a week.
