Western countries fight against illegal Russian vote over the state of Crimea
WASHINGTON (WKRC) -- The U.S. and other western nations say Sunday's vote to decide the future of the Crimea region in Ukraine is illegitimate.
Tens of thousands joined dueling protests in Moscow just hours before a pivotal vote in Crimea. The referendum decides if Crimea will break away from Ukraine and become part of Russia.
Thirteen of the 15 members of security council at the United Nations voted for a U.S. sponsored resolution declaring Crimea's referendum illegal, but Russia used its veto power, causing it to fail.
A delegation of U.S. senators in Ukraine also criticized the impending vote.
"We are united in our full support for Ukraine sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity," says Arizona senator John McCain.
But Russian forces are already on the the move. They took control of a village near the border with Crimea.
President Obama's national security team met Saturday at the White House to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
