UC deploys ambassadors to improve safety
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- UC has recruited a team of ambassadors to help try to keep the areas around campus safe.
Beginning today the team known as the Block by Block Safety Ambassadors will deploy. They'll help Cincinnati Police and UC Police by giving information to students in high foot-traffic areas. They'll also serve as extra sets of eyes and ears for police.
The UC Ambassadors are part of a number strategies being implemented to enhance public safety on and off campus, said, UC interim Public Safety Director Robert Ambach in a release. The purpose is not to replace additional police patrols, which have been effective in reducing violent incidents off campus, but rather to supplement these policing efforts. The ambassadors will be deployed from 6:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. in the areas east and south of campus, particularly along Short Vine and in the U Square area.
More than 100 people applied to be on the team. The operations manager is a marine veteran who also has a law enforcement background. Five others have been chosen to round out the team.
Block By Block has been in operation in Cincinnati since 2001 in the downtown business district to help visitors, workers, shoppers and residents stay safe.
