Madisonville kicks off 500 Garden Project
MADISONVILLE, Ohio (Brad Underwood) -- Saturday's weather proved to be perfect in Madisonville as the first of 500 gardens were built to kick off the community's 500 Garden Project.
The 500 Garden Project is geared towards providing fresh produce in areas that don't have ready access to it.
Jodi Finchum's backyard was busy as volunteers built the frame, dumped the dirt and planted seeds.
"So many benefits, I've been wanting to do it. I've never gardened before. I grew up helping my mom some, my grandma some," said Finchum.
Now, Finchum says she and two year old son Braxton will spend a lot of time in the garden this spring and summer.
"Being outside, growing your own food, knowing where it comes from," said Finchum.
The project is a collaboration with the Madisonville Redevelopment Corporation and Sidestreams. It only costs $50 to start up and participants also get a free training class.
Karen Zanger says the project also provides a lot of help.
"We match them with a mentor, an experienced gardener to help them be successful in their first growing season," said Zanger.
Zanger says she hopes the project will become a model for other neighborhoods in greater Cincinnati.
