Phase two of Banks expansion set to begin Monday

CINCINNATI (Brad Underwood) -- Walking and driving near the Banks will become more difficult starting Monday morning as phase two of the development project begins.

Closures are set to start at 7 a.m. Monday, but some of the work is already underway.

Several areas along Freedom Way have been closed for street and side walk work. Big equipment will be brought in Monday forcing additional closures.

On Freedom Way, one westbound lane between Race and Rosa Parks will be closed as well as the northern sidewalk in that stretch will be closed.

On Race Street, the east sidewalk between Freedom Way and Second Street will be closed.

The Central Riverfront Garage Race Street ramp will also be closed to daily parkers, but will be open for Reds, Bengals and Bearcat games, as well as concerts.

Developers say phase two  will build 291 apartments and include 20,000 square feet of retail at the Banks.

When Darcey O'Shaughnessy moved to Cincinnati, he thought the Banks was the perfect place to live.

"I love it, I think a lot of cities have this plan but it's cool to see a city put it into action," said O'Shaughnessy. " There's a lot of exciting stuff, fun bars, fun things to do, the people that put things together here are great."

According to developers, when everything is complete, the Banks will include housing for 3,000 residents and pump $6 million in private investment to the riverfront.
