New Richmond swim coach dies in lawnmower accident

MOSCOW, Ohio (WKRC) -- A popular swim coach died in a lawnmower accident at his Washington Township home. Joseph Middeler passed away on Friday.

The 63-year-old was mowing his lawn on U.S. 52 near Moscow when it rolled over an embankment and landed on top of him. The coroner says his death was accidental.

According to New Richmond schools' website, Middeler was a 1970 graduate of New Richmond High School. He started the swim program at New Richmond Middle School in the early 1990s. He coached there before moving up to varsity. He was inducted into the New Richmond High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. He was also a substitute teacher for the past 25 years.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23 at the E. C. Nurre Funeral Home in Amelia. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter Church in New Richmond. Burial will be at St. Peter Cemetery.
