Police identify suspect in school copper theft

ELMWOOD PLACE, Ohio (Jeff Hirsh) -- Police identify one of two people they believe stole copper from Elmwood Elementary School. Joshua Bessey is charged with theft and breaking and entering for the Saturday crime.

This is the second copper theft at the school. In early March, thieves stole the copper pipes from the school's air conditioning unit at the back of the school. They cut the fence to get onto the property.

It cost the school $19,000 to fix and replace it. They did the work Thursday and Friday of last week. By late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, it was gone.

Elmwood Elementary officials put up a security camera after the first theft. That camera did what it was supposed to do over the weekend. Police say it's Joshua Bessey who is looking up right at the surveillance camera. They're still looking for an accomplice.

Police believe the same thieves are responsible for both thefts, but Bessey is currently only charged with the most recent. Police have not arrested him yet.
