Human Rights Campaign calls Cincinnati Archbishop to remove morality clause from Catholic teacher contracts

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- The Human Rights Campaign, also known as the HRC, is calling on the Cincinnati Archbishop to remove the "morality clause" from Cincinnati Catholic school teacher contracts for the 2014-2015 school year.

The HRC is the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights organization.  They claim the new "morality clause" takes anti-LGBT to a new level and calls for the firing of gay and lesbian school employees.  The organization also claims the policy cites support of a homosexual lifestyle is grounds for dismissal.

In a press release from HRC Friday they say more than 2,200 educators at 94 parochial schools in the archdiocese will be affected by the new contract.  Supporters of LGBT equality are joining HRC in a letter to the Cincinnati Archbishop, Dennis Schnurr, to end the policy.

The letter reads, in part:

"As a fair-minded person and supporter of the Human Rights Campaign, I ask that this upcoming policy never see the light of day.  Young people and the teachers who work so hard to educate them will only be harmed.  We cannot afford to allow prejudice to influence our schools of learning, and I implore you to stop harming our teacher and our kids."

People against the "morality clause" gathered at 3:30p.m. Friday at The Public Library of Cincinnati and, after collecting nearly 30,000 signatures, walked to the office of the Archdiocese and delivered the letter.  They believe the US Council of Catholic Bishops and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati continues to discriminate against people who support equality.  Despite the Pope's vocal support of accepting the LGBT Catholics when he said, "Who am I to judge a gay person of goodwill who seeks the Lord."

The press release from the HRC states, "Dozens of LGBT teachers, who have committed their life's work to their Catholic faith, have already lost their jobs in schools across the country.  HRC calls on Archbishop Schnurr to remove this anti-LGBT police from Cincinnati Catholic schools and ensure that LGBT Catholics no longer have to choose between who they are, who they love and what they believe."
