Former teacher fired for racial remarks defends comments

FAIRFIELD, Ohio (Angela Ingram) -- Friday night a teacher fired from the job he held for a long time is speaking out.

The Fairfield School District fired Gil Voigt Thursday night accusing him of making racial comments at one of his students.  But he says the whole situation has been blown way out of proportion.

Gil Voigt was accused of making repeated race-based and insulting comments to fairfield high school students over a period of years.  Though he maintains he did nothing wrong, Voigt announced his intention to resign. He's been on unpaid leave since December.

Thursday, a referee appointed by the Ohio Department of Education ruled the district had cause to fire him. At the board of education meeting Thursday night, members voted four to nothing to to terminate Voigt's contract.

Voigt is appealing the board's decision to the Butler County Court of Common Pleas.
